Potential & Possiblity
We are each filled with so much possibility and potential. So much we can do. So much we can be.
Yet despite our desire to do and be, we often don’t.
Potential and possibility can be addictive. The warm glow of the light at the end of the tunnel. The sense of satisfaction we imagine we will feel, we get to feel it now without having to do the hard work. We can escape from the pain, the uncomfortable that faces us in the moment. Potential and possibility offers us an illusion. We can live in the dream of what will be. The change we will effect. The person we will be and what it will mean to be that person, to have done those things.
We dance back and forth between the dance of ‘dig in’, ‘push harder’ ‘push through’. We just need to be tougher. We need to suck it up. Thinking pain is for the weak. We deprive ourselves. We punish ourselves. We commit to more challenges.
And then we collapse.
We fall into the hole we were ignoring. We are exhausted. We begin to think that success is only for others. Only they can have it. They have more resources. They have a body or brain made for it. They don’t have the commitments we have. We talk ourselves into thinking that we can’t have that. We can’t do that. We go through the process of accepting that we need to ‘accept that is what is set for us in life’.
Until we fell the call again.
The urge. The demand to act. To do more. Be more.
And so we oscillate.
There is another way.
We can respond to the calling in not just a sustainable way. We can be nourished by living out a life of realised potential. Where making possibility reality is what feeds us.
Don’t get me wrong. Challenging ourselves is a good thing. We do well to push what we think is possible. But there is a difference between pushing ourselves to do more than we though possible and pushing ourselves and ignoring the messages our body is giving us. Denying the experience of our inner landscape. If we truly want to push into areas we never thought possible we need to be even more aware of our bodies and our inner world. We need to know ourselves so deeply.
In deeply knowing ourselves we are able to not only bring our ideas to life, we are able to live a life of joy and purpose.
So what if, just once, rather than push yourself and shove aside what is bubbling up for you in your internal world, you held that what is coming up is a potent message for you and by understanding that message you can go further than you ever thought possible?
